Adam Cutts
Adam is a PhD student at Cardiff University, focussing on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind Vip and Mpp activity. He obtained his MSci in Biochemistry from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in 2020. During his time at UEA, he gained experience in multiple disciplines, partaking in projects focussed on arthritis, inflammation, and on understanding the redox states of cytoglobin, with the latter forming the core of his MSci research project. Later that year, he began training as a secondary science teacher. Adam returned to academia in October 2022, to embark on a project under the supervision of Prof. Colin Berry. His research into Bt pesticidal proteins (specifically Vip and Mpp) is central to his wider interest in pore-forming proteins more generally; Adam’s work focusses understanding their structure-function relationships, applying molecular modelling and novel biophysical techniques to this end. At SIP 2024, his presentation on the application of these techniques to predict Vip structure and to image Vip pores utilising the passage of calcium led to his award of 2nd Place Oral Presentation and was presented with a Bacterial Division Travel Award.
